WD40 Is not infact a lubricant but rather an oil based Water Dispersant hence WD. As far as we know cause there is no patent on it and therefor no recipie. To be honest thats all it should really be used for, to disperse water from parts where it does not belong. For example after washing your bike. As its oil based however it is also great for cleaning bikes or anything els which is greasy or oil based. However I would not use it on rubber or silicone as oil tends to dissolve or degrade these. Here is the problem though, the effect it has as a Water Dispersant is to form a thin film of itself over the surface of everything it comes in contact with. This is so that, water does not come in contact with the surface or any water preset gets dispersed. This however also means that any lubrication which is for example meant to provide lubrication between two metal surfaces now provides lubrication between 2 WD40 surfaces. It can also happen that the WD40 dissolves into any lubrication altering its composition or completely repelling it from the surface. And yes as mentioned in other comments as a Water Dispersant it has the property of easily spreading and running into everything including sealed bearings. Therefor I like to use WD40 to dry my bikes components as well as cleaning of grease however afterwards I take care to clean of the WD40 with alcohol and then appropriately lubricate all parts.
