In my experience, it mostly depends on how dirty the chain gets and what degreaser you use. If you are looking for a solid price-to-performance ratio, a classic plastic chain cleaner (like Barbieri or Park Tool CG-2.2) works well, but it has its limits.
No plastic chain tool is 100% leak-proof. Degreaser will splash or drip, so always place cardboard under the bike if cleaning indoors or on a balcony.
